BELURAN: Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Bawang in Paitan has suffered nearly 90 per cent damage following recent floods and requires urgent repairs.
Sabah Education, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk James Ratib said the destruction has severely disrupted school operations.
During a visit to the school, he said preliminary assessments found that 200 sets of student desks and chairs, 30 sets for teachers and five sets for administrative use need to be replaced.
"Facilities in nine classrooms were affected, including whiteboards and Smart TVs. All textbooks, including those stored in the supply room, were destroyed. In addition, 30 laptops and eight desktop computers used by students are no longer functional.
"The floods also damaged the resource centre, toilets and meeting room, while 10 water storage tanks were swept away.
"This situation requires immediate action and close coordination to ensure recovery works are carried out without disrupting students' access to education.
"I urge the Sabah State Education Department to provide immediate assistance so that repairs and asset replacement can be completed as soon as possible," he said in a statement.
SK Bawang K9 Beluran is among 19 schools affected by severe flooding in recent days.
As of 4pm, more than 5,000 flood victims from Paitan, Pitas and Tawau remained at temporary evacuation centres.
