KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is expected to continue experiencing a wet weather pattern over the next five days.

Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) minister Datuk Seri Arthur Kurup said that the authorities would closely monitoring the development of the weather situation in the state of Sabah.

Based on the latest weather model analysis by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia), he said Sabah is expected to be influenced by weak easterly and westerly winds throughout the forecast period.

"This condition increases atmospheric moisture and may result in rain and thunderstorms in several areas of Sabah.

"For the West Coast areas, rain is expected over Sabah waters in the morning, while in the afternoon to night, rain and thunderstorms may occur in some places.

"In the Interior areas, rain is expected in the morning at the beginning and end of the forecast period, while in the afternoon and night, rain and thunderstorms are expected in several places throughout the forecast period," he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, in the Sandakan, Tawau and Kudat divisions, rain in several areas is expected in the morning followed by rain and thunderstorms in the afternoon and night throughout the forecast period.

As of press time, over 2,000 flood victims from Pitas, Sipitang, Sook, Beaufort, Membakut and Tenom were seeking shelter at designated relief centres.

"As the responsible Minister, I have instructed MET Malaysia to ensure that the dissemination of weather information and warnings is carried out proactively and in a timely manner.

"I want the people of Sabah to have access to accurate and up-to-date forecast data so that any disaster risks arising from this wet weather can be managed more effectively at the community level," said the Pensiangan member of parliament and Sook state assemblyman.
