KOTA KINABALU: Sabah journalists were given an exclusive insight into the standards of award-winning journalism during a two-day workshop that began today.

The targeted learning session, organised by the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI), is led by Kajai Award winner Farrah Naz Karim.

MPI chief executive officer Ainol Amriz Ismail said the workshop focuses on sharing real-life experiences in producing high-quality journalistic work capable of meeting professional evaluation at the national level.

"Through a practical and reflective approach, participants are guided through key stages of producing strong journalistic pieces, including selecting ideas, developing compelling story angles, conducting in-depth research, and refining writing techniques.

"Emphasis is also placed on ethical considerations and factual accuracy, which are regarded as core benchmarks of award-winning journalism," he said in a Facebook post.

Ainol added that the programme aims to deepen participants' understanding of Kajai standards, sharpen their ability to identify strong news values, and strengthen their skills in producing impactful, credible, and socially relevant reporting.

He said the session was also intended to motivate Sabah journalists to be more competitive, confident, and courageous in elevating local stories to the national stage, while maintaining professionalism and journalistic integrity.

Earlier, Farrah, who is also Media Prima News and Current Affairs deputy group managing editor, said reporters should go beyond simply taking notes at press conferences and look deeper beneath the surface when addressing issues.

She said journalists must be courageous and take calculated risks in producing exclusive, factual reports that resonate with the public.

The programme is attended by 24 participants from media organisations and government agencies.
