KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s cultural diversity and harmony among its multi-racial communities form the foundation of the state’s social strength and must be preserved.
“Festivals like this reflect Sabah’s uniqueness as a state rich in cultural diversity, where every celebration is shared in a spirit of mutual respect and goodwill,” said Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor during the opening of the 2026 Chinese New Year Carnival at Dataran Deasoka on Monday.
His speech was delivered by Rural Development Minister Datuk Rubin Balang.
Hajiji said the state government’s inclusive approach is in line with its aspiration to build a peaceful, united and prosperous Sabah for all.
He also recognised the important role of the Chinese community as a strategic partner in the state’s development, particularly in the economic, entrepreneurship, education and cultural heritage sectors.
The state government, he said, would continue supporting initiatives and active participation of Chinese community organisations as partners in implementing Sabah’s development agenda under the Sabah Maju Jaya framework.
He also expressed appreciation to the Federation of Chinese Associations of Sabah, which brings together more than 160 associations across the state and the Federal Territory of Labuan, for its continued contribution to community programmes.
Hajiji said close cooperation between the government and community organisations, regardless of race, is vital to ensure development policies are implemented comprehensively and effectively.
Also present were Youth and Sports Development and Creative Economy Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan; Deputy State Assembly Speaker Datuk Al Hambra Tun Juhar; Kota Kinabalu Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah; and Federation of Chinese Associations of Sabah president Tan Sri Dr Goh Tian Chuan.
