KOTA KINABALU: Courts here and in Sandakan heard 19 charges related to illegal electricity connections, meter tampering and unauthorised electrical works near high-voltage installations.
The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS), in a statement, said the offences under the Electricity Supply Enactment 2024 (EBE 2024) resulted in RM190,000 in fines through proceedings at the Sessions Courts in Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan between Jan 1 and March this year.
Among those fined was Maribumi Sdn Bhd, which installed fibre optic concrete poles near an 11kV high-voltage electrical installation owned by Sabah Electricity without valid authorisation from the owner and licence holder.
The main contractor was fined RM11,000 after the work resulted in an electrical accident that caused permanent injury to one of the company's workers.
MBS Tuning was fined RM20,000 under Subsection 61(3)(a) for an illegal electricity connection and an additional RM5,000 for carrying out wiring works without approval from Sabah Electricity under Subsection 61(8).
World Trend Garden Furniture Sdn Bhd also pleaded guilty to an illegal electricity connection and was fined RM25,000.
Three other cases — involving Mahadi Santa, Kemas Handal Sdn Bhd and CCV Retail Sdn Bhd — pleaded not guilty and requested trials.
Meanwhile, at the Sandakan Sessions Court, Ori Taste Restaurant Sdn Bhd, which operates four premises, faced seven charges related to interference with electricity meter installations.
The court imposed fines ranging from RM8,000 to RM20,000, bringing the total to RM92,000.
Also committing similar offences were Ng Kooi Huat, the owner of a residential property at Astana Heights Semi-D (Lot 180), and Tan Siak Eam of V-One Dance Club.
All proceedings were conducted by ECoS prosecuting counsel Andryeno Thomas.
