KOTA KINABALU: Breaking fast by the beach offered a more relaxing experience than dining at restaurants for Siti Darmatasiah Awang Bahar.
The 19-year-old from Membakut travelled almost two hours by road to spend time with three other Generation Z cousins at Tanjung Lipat.
"This beach has always been our hangout spot, even outside Ramadan. But today we decided to rent a basic picnic set to break fast together.
"It was worth coming here to enjoy the sea breeze and the beautiful sunset rather than dining at restaurants, which can be noisy," she said, adding that they had earlier visited a Ramadan bazaar to buy food.
The idea of setting up picnic packages was introduced by Melissa Sulaiman, who enjoys nature and outdoor activities.
The 36-year-old entrepreneur from here said she had been organising picnics and camping activities for many years.
"Previously, when I came here for picnics, I noticed the area became dark after sunset due to limited lighting.
"That was when I came up with the idea of providing these picnic setups so people could stay longer," she said, adding that her service began in 2023.
Melissa said the basic picnic package included a mat, pillows, a table and lamps.
For a more advanced setup, the package included umbrellas and more sophisticated tableware to create a romantic ambience.
She added that besides Ramadan, the picnic setups were also booked for other occasions, including birthdays and special celebrations.
