Continuous operations and warning signs for crocodile off KK waters

Mayor Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah.

KOTA KINABALU: Authorities have been conducting operations to ensure the safety of beachgoers following the recent sighting of a crocodile.

Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah said that at the district level, there is a committee comprising Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK), the police, the Wildlife Department and the Fire and Rescue Department.

"For these operations, we normally carry them out once every three months on a fixed schedule.

"However, if we receive a call, we will immediately go to the location to inspect the area," he told the media when met after the presentation of Raya cookies by the Sabah government at Menara Kinabalu here.

A few days ago, visitors at Tanjung Aru beach were alarmed when a crocodile was sighted early in the morning.

Sabin also said that the crocodile's presence had been reported since 2024.

He added that authorities had been receiving about one call a month about the reptiles, sometimes even more.

"However, lately there have been more frequent sightings. We have installed several warning measures to ensure visitors going near the river or the sea remain cautious."
