KOTA KINABALU: As preparations for Aidilfitri gather pace across the country, Noraidah Lamat is confronting a reality no parent should have to endure — celebrating the festive season without her daughter, the late Zara Qairina Mahathir.
"While others are busy buying their Raya clothes, last night I felt moved to look again at Mama's and Zara's Raya outfits.
"They were bought in June 2025 for Raya 2026. All this time, I kept them stored in a clothes container.
"Seeing these four outfits now makes my chest feel tight with sadness. Allah did not permit Mama to celebrate Raya with Zara," the 45-year-old mother recently posted on her Facebook page.
Noraidah added that Zara would usually have at least five sets of Raya clothes, which she would buy early in preparation.
However, she said it saddened her that the person meant to wear them had already returned to the Almighty.
"As a symbol of a grieving soul, this year I have chosen black as my theme.
"Let us continue: reciting Surah Yassin every day; performing Solat Hajat every day; and offering prayers that never cease," she said, adding that she hoped the inquest proceedings, which will resume on March 31, will run smoothly and that justice will prevail.
Zara, then 13, was found unconscious on the ground floor of the dormitory at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha on July 16 last year and died the following day.
The inquest, which began in September last year, will resume at the end of this month.
On the 60th day of proceedings on Feb 3, 64 witnesses testified before Coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan.
