KENINGAU: Rice supply in Sabah's interior has improved following increased stock distribution, State Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industries minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar said.
He said the monthly demand stands at 470 metric tonnes, with an average daily requirement of about 16 metric tonnes.
He said about 15 per cent, or 70 metric tonnes, of the required supply has been delivered and is being distributed today, exceeding the daily requirement.
Jamawi added that instructions have been issued to expedite the delivery of affordable imported white rice (BPI) in large quantities to Keningau, Sook, Tenom, Kemabong and Sipitang.
"In Tenom alone, a total of 53 tonnes of rice has entered the retail market through Bernas-appointed distributors, namely PPK Tenom (30 tonnes) and Sazarice (23 tonnes).
"Overall, based on the current movement of rice stocks into Tenom, supply is believed to be sufficient, with the cooperation of wholesalers who have delivered stocks to several retail outlets in the area today.
"Findings also show that panic buying has subsided and the situation has stabilised," he said in a statement.
The Melalap assemblyman said rice supply in Sabah is sufficient and advised the public against panic buying following reports of shortages in several interior districts.
He said the state's rice stockpile is currently able to meet demand for up to six months
