KOTA KINABALU: An investigation report into a train accident involving school teachers and a child will be presented at the Sabah cabinet meeting next week.

Sabah Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said he has requested a full report on the incident from the Sabah State Railway Department.

"The preliminary investigation report has been submitted to me and has also been forwarded to the Sabah Chief Minister's office today.

"I will present the investigation report at the Sabah cabinet meeting on March 11," he said in a statement issued two days after the Tuesday morning incident.

Following the accident, Melalap assemblyman Datuk Jamawi Jaafar and Tenom police confirmed that the train experienced brake failure.

The locomotive was eventually brought to a halt after villagers sacrificed their motorcycles by placing them on the railway track to stop the train

It is understood that 12 teachers from SK Pangi and a young child were onboard at the time.

In a separate statement, the Sabah State Railway Department said it has activated an internal investigation through a Board of Enquiry, in accordance with standard procedures.

"The department has also lodged a report at the Tenom Police Station. Any follow-up action will be based on the findings of the Board of Enquiry report, in accordance with provisions stipulated under the Railway Enactment.

"Internal investigations by the department and the police are currently underway."
