KOTA KINABALU: Melalap assemblyman Datuk Jamawi Jaafar said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has agreed to provide six new motorcycles to replace those destroyed while stopping a train that suffered brake failure.

"On behalf of the six young men, I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude," he said in his Facebook post.

Yesterday, villagers halted a train along Sabah's west coast route from Tenom to Pangi by placing the motorcycles on the tracks after the train's brakes failed.

All passengers and the driver were reported safe following the incident.

The train was ferrying teachers from Sekolah Kebangsaan Pangi. A passenger recorded a video capturing tense moments on board.

Passengers, including toddlers, were seen huddling together.

Photos of the motorcycles and a trolley placed on the tracks have also been shared.

Jamawi also said the motorcycles placed on the tracks slowed down the train and enabled the driver to regain control.

"Congratulations also to the train driver for remaining calm.

"To all the teachers of SK Pangi, may you not lose heart in continuing to educate the children in the interior. I am proud of all of you."
