KOTA KINABALU: Since Sabah's Commercial Collaboration Agreement (CCA) with Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas), oil and gas contract values awarded to local-based firms have more than tripled, a minister said.
Minister in the Prime Minister's department (Sabah and Sarawak Affairs) Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said the value of oil and gas contracts awarded to Sabah-based companies had increased to almost RM2 billion from Rm600 million.
"Since the CCA was signed in December 2021, clear changes can be measured," he told the civil servants when delivering a speech related to Sabah and Sarawak at Sabah Federal Administrative Complex here.
"The CCA is a pragmatic, interim approach to ensure Sabah is not left behind in the oil and gas sector, while institutional issues are resolved through the proper channels," he added.
Mustapha said Sabah has also secured a 50 per cent stake in the Samarang oil field, 25 per cent in Samur, and an additional 25 per cent stake in the floating liquefied natural gas facility in Sipitang.
More than 300 Sabah companies are now involved as vendors, and the share of contracts held by local companies has increased to about 36 per cent, compared with only 3 per cent previously, he said.
"This is not merely an economic figure — it represents the development of the state's capacity, the transfer of skills, and the strengthening of the local economy," he added.
Sabah contributes nearly 40 per cent of Malaysia's oil production and about 20 per cent of its gas output.
