KOTA KINABALU: About 100 residents of Taman Keramat, Likas, took part in a community kitchen garden programme aimed at strengthening food security at the grassroots level.
The programme began with welcoming remarks by former Kapayan assemblyman Datuk Jannie Lasimbang, followed by Deputy Agriculture and Food Security minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin .
Chan, who funded the initiative, said the programme reflects the federal government’s continued commitment to enhancing food security, particularly in urban communities.
The main session focused on planting techniques using potting soil, a practical method suited for residents living in high-rise housing such as apartments. Participants were introduced to simple and effective ways to grow vegetables for daily consumption despite limited space.
Organisers said the initiative comes at a time of global uncertainty, including conflicts that have disrupted food supply chains and driven up prices of essential goods such as fertilisers and vegetables.
As such, growing food at home is increasingly seen as a strategic step to reduce dependence on external markets while improving household resilience.
The programme also highlighted how practical, community-driven approaches can help build long-term self-sufficiency and resilience in facing current economic challenges.
