KOTA KINABALU: Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) took a step forward in its digital transformation journey by hosting a knowledge-sharing session on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in collaboration with Huawei Technologies Malaysia.

The session last month was held at the DBKK Building and brought together key leaders and technology experts to explore how AI can shape the future of city governance.

It was attended by Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah, alongside DBKK Director-General Lifred Wong, deputy director-generals, department heads, and representatives from Huawei Malaysia.

Among the Huawei delegates were Joe Zhou Yi Hao, Vice President (Government), Nicholas Yong, Senior Industry Solutions Expert, and Ding Ze Xian, Account Manager.

A key highlight of the session was a presentation titled “Sovereign Cloud & AI Enabling Cognitive City” delivered by Nicholas Yong. The presentation offered insights into the latest developments in AI technology and its potential applications in enhancing organisational efficiency and service delivery.

Discussions during the session centred on how AI and cloud-based solutions can support the development of a “cognitive city” — one that leverages data, automation, and intelligent systems to improve urban management and public services. The sharing also provided DBKK officials with a clearer understanding of how emerging technologies can be integrated into existing frameworks to create more responsive and efficient governance.

This initiative reflects DBKK’s broader commitment to strengthening service delivery through digital transformation. By engaging with industry leaders such as Huawei, the city council aims to accelerate its vision of building a smarter, more efficient, and sustainable Kota Kinabalu.

As cities worldwide continue to adopt digital solutions, efforts like this highlight the importance of collaboration between the public sector and technology providers. For Kota Kinabalu, the session marks another step towards embracing innovation and preparing for the demands of a rapidly evolving urban landscape.
