KOTA KINABALU: Education Ministry has produced more than 100,000 graduates through its vocational colleges nationwide since 2016.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the achievement surpassed the 90,000 graduate target set under the Malaysia Education Blueprint (2013–2025).

“Over a decade of implementation, more than 103,000 Malaysians have been developed as highly skilled human capital who now play an important role in the nation’s industrial development,” he said in a speech at the 10th Convocation Ceremony of Vocational Colleges for the Sabah Zone and Federal Territory of Labuan at the Sabah International Convention Centre on Thursday.

His speech was delivered by Deputy Chief Minister I and Works and Utilities Minister Joachim Gunsalam.

Hajiji said the development reflects how TVET has evolved from being a secondary option into a mainstream education pathway and a preferred choice among students.

He said public confidence in TVET is evident from the increase in applications to vocational colleges, which rose from 28,098 in 2022 to 58,263 in 2026, compared with an intake capacity of 17,912 students.

“TVET is now the backbone of the nation’s workforce development, producing not just certificate holders but individuals who can add value to the economy through their skills and expertise,” he said.

Hajiji added that in facing global workforce changes, including advancements in artificial intelligence, renewable energy and the green economy, TVET graduates must be prepared to adapt to future industry needs.

He urged graduates to embrace lifelong learning and continuously upgrade their skills through professional certifications and industry experience.

A total of 1,000 graduates from eight vocational colleges in Sabah and Labuan were celebrated at the ceremony.

Of the total, 520 graduates received their diplomas in the first session presented by Joachim. They comprised graduates in Diploma in Early Childhood Education (47), Diploma in Automotive Technology (114), Diploma in Electrical Technology (108), Diploma in Welding Technology (60), Diploma in Construction Technology (66), Diploma in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technology (55), Diploma in Industrial Machining Technology (44) and Diploma in Ruminant Agroindustry (26)- Info by Sabah Information department.
