SANDAKAN, April 23 — The community in Sandakan is beginning recovery efforts after a fire destroyed about 1,000 homes in Kampung Bahagia’s floating village on Sunday, displacing hundreds of families.
Victims have been moved to Temporary Relocation Centres (PPS) as authorities assess the damage.
McDonald's Malaysia responded by distributing nearly 2,000 meals and beverages to victims, frontliners and volunteers, with a further 4,000 meals to be delivered across five PPS this week—bringing total aid to over 6,000 meals.
Managing Director Azmir Jaafar said community solidarity is key in ensuring no one faces the crisis alone.
Relief efforts continue with support from authorities, including the Social Welfare Department, police, Fire and Rescue Department, RELA and volunteers, focusing on food, shelter and basic needs.
The initiative is part of McDonald’s ongoing community outreach under Program Komuniti @ McDonald’s, which supports disaster relief and vulnerable groups nationwide.
