Motorcyclists compounded RM300 each for emitting loud noise

KOTA KINABALU: Ten motorcyclists were compounded RM300 each for emitting excessive noise during an enforcement operation at the Likas Public Park here.

Sabah Department of Environment (DoE) director Nor Rashidah Ghazali said the offences were largely due to illegal modifications to motorcycle exhaust systems.

“Most cases of excessive noise involve motorcycles that have been modified, particularly the exhaust system, which causes them to exceed permissible noise levels,” she said during a press conference at the park.

The 10 motorcyclists were among 40 motorcycles and 143 vehicles inspected during the operation, dubbed Ops Gerak Kebangsaan Kenderaan Motor.

The state-level event involved 20 personnel from the DoE, six from the Kota Kinabalu Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, 17 from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and four from the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP).

Rashidah also said the DoE compounded three diesel-powered vehicles RM2,000 each for emitting black smoke.

“Black smoke emissions are usually caused by poor vehicle maintenance. Owners must ensure their vehicles are properly maintained to avoid such offences.

“We advise all vehicle owners to service their engines regularly, use quality fuel and lubricants, and ensure exhaust systems are functioning properly,” she said, adding that air pollution poses long-term health risks, especially for those with respiratory conditions.

Other enforcement agencies also took action, with police issuing five summonses, JPJ issuing 59 compounds, and LPKP issuing two notices.

Meanwhile, commenting on open burning, Rashidah said open burning offences can be compounded up to a maximum of RM2,000.

“However, if the case is brought to court, offenders may face fines of up to RM1 million and imprisonment under the amended provisions," she said, adding there has yet any open burning case being brought to the court.
