KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Nurses Association (SANA) is expanding its community service initiatives through the implementation of a pilot project for a General Care Guide Module for Bedridden Patients and the Elderly for Caregivers.

SANA president Tumble Ngadiran said the initiative aims to provide guidance and practical training to family members and caregivers who manage bedridden patients or elderly individuals after they are discharged from the hospital.

“The refined module emphasizes the mental and physical readiness of caregivers, as well as technical aspects such as personal hygiene care, nutrition, and patient safety.

“This module is not merely theoretical; it requires hands-on training, especially in handling patients, including techniques for lifting and repositioning them to prevent further complications,” he said after a courtesy visit to the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah, Tun Musa Aman, at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Monday.

Tumble explained that the pilot project will begin in the Kota Kinabalu area and target caregivers identified as needing assistance, including those caring for elderly individuals with dementia or wandering tendencies.

“The training will be conducted by instructors from within SANA, comprising registered nurses, including retirees who continue to maintain their Annual Practising Certificate (APC) through ongoing professional development courses.

“Tun Musa responded positively and views this initiative as highly beneficial. He also expressed interest in seeing our commitment to implementing this project, especially considering that some retirees who left the profession over 10 years ago remain actively contributing,” he added.

To date, SANA has more than 10,000 members, comprising nurses from both the public and private sectors.
