KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's Rural Development Ministry is looking into implementing alternative rural road classifications and new methods to improve water supply in rural areas, its minister said today.
Its minister Datuk Rubin Balang said that in addition to R2 and R3 category roads under the Public Works Department, the remaining existing roads are classified as non-qualified roads and are not included within the department's maintenance scope.
"Therefore, these roads are more appropriately placed under the responsibility of the Rural Development Ministry.
"These roads will be divided into three categories: Community Economic Link Roads, Community Link Roads and Village Link Roads," he said during his winding-up speech at the state legislative assembly sitting.
Rubin, who is also Kemabong assemblyman, said that for rural water supply, the ministry proposes to implement fast and effective methods such as solar pumps, gravity-fed water systems and underground water sources.
Through these methods, clean water supply can be delivered to areas not covered by treated water supply from the Sabah Water Department.
"Both initiatives will be brought to an engagement session with the Rural and Regional Development Minister in the near future."
Meanwhile, Sabah Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar said the state has established the Sabah Oil Palm Industry Authority this year.
The authority is responsible for the cultivation and development of the oil palm industry in Sabah.
