TENOM: The upcoming Sabah Murut Cultural Centre next month here is part of the initiatives to enhance heritage-based tourism in the state.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said the centre aims to preserve the cultural identity of the Murut community while sustainably boosting the state’s tourism appeal.

He added that the key component of the project is the construction of the “Skull House” (Rumah Tengkorak), which will serve as an iconic structure and main attraction in the area.

“The design of the Skull House is symbolically translated as a representation of history and heritage, with a spatial layout that guides visitors through a structured and meaningful cultural narrative journey.

“The development approach for this project is grounded in principles of authenticity, historical storytelling, and immersive spatial experiences to ensure visitors not only observe, but truly appreciate the cultural heritage of the Murut people,” he said in a statement after visiting the site.

The building will also function as a cultural interpretation centre, featuring historical exhibitions, traditional artefacts, and screening spaces to introduce visitors to the origins of the Murut community.

The project also includes the development of 10 burial huts representing various Murut sub-ethnic groups such as Murut Tagol, Timugon, Tangara and others.

The project of a contract value of RM825,559.60 commenced on May 6 last year is expected to be fully completed by May 6, 2026,

Present was Sabah Rural Development minister Datuk Rubin Balang.
