Borneo Marathon hit-and-run man also skidded along Jalan Tuaran

KOTA KINABALU: A 27-year-old man also skidded after running away after hit a marathoner. 

District Police assistant commissioner Kasim Muda said they confirmed receiving a report regarding a road accident involving a private vehicle and a participant in the 42-kilometre category of the Borneo International Marathon on Jalan UMS, Kota Kinabalu.

"The incident is believed to have occurred on May 10, 2026, at approximately 3.30am while the victim, a 40-year-old man, was taking part in the marathon and running along the left side of the road designated for participants.

"Preliminary investigations found that a Proton Saga driven by a 27-year-old local man struck the victim from behind while the runner was at KM32 Jalan UMS heading towards Likas. 

"Following the collision, the vehicle is believed to have continued moving before skidding near the Petronas station along Jalan Tuaran Bypass," he said in a statement. 

As a result of the incident, the runner suffered minor injuries to his hands, knees and the back of his neck, and received further treatment at a private hospital. 

The driver also sustained minor injuries to his right arm.

Kassim said based on the nvestigations at the scene, it was found that safety cones had been placed along the left lane of the road to separate the marathon route from traffic lanes used by vehicles.

"The vehicle involved has been taken to the Kota Kinabalu District Police Headquarters for further inspection by PUSPAKOM.

"The case is being investigated under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959, and further investigations are ongoing to determine the actual cause of the incident."

Police advise all road users to drive carefully at all times and comply with safety instructions, especially during public events involving the use of public roads, in order to prevent unwanted incidents.
