TUARAN: A company linked to a biogas system in Kampung Kauluan in Tamparuli has been given six months to fully resolve alleged pollution issues affecting villagers, or face possible stricter action from the government.
"Sabah Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar said he remained dissatisfied with the measures implemented by the company despite several preventive and corrective efforts being carried out."
"I am still not satisfied with the measures that have been implemented. have decided that every three months, I will personally visit this area to monitor developments and ensure that all matters discussed are properly carried out.
"If within six months this issue recurs and cannot be resolved, I will not hesitate to propose to the government that more drastic action be taken," he said after visiting the plantation here today.
Jamawi said the biogas system, which was meant to manage energy waste, continued to create problems for residents in the surrounding villages.
He said the interests and wellbeing of villagers should not be compromised for the sake of protecting company operations.
"We do not want to protect only a few companies while causing harm to villagers.
"This area should become an example. Although it is important in terms of the state's biosecurity for chicken and egg production, it must be free from pollution," he said.
Jamawi also suggested that the company consider relocating its operations if the issue could not be effectively resolved.
He added that despite operating in the area for almost 15 years, the company had yet to implement any corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes for villagers.
"It would be appropriate for the company to contribute to the local community through educational assistance, basic facilities and welfare funds as a sign of respect to residents in the area."
Jamawi said his ministry would continue monitoring livestock farm operations and would not compromise with parties found violating regulations.
"We will take firm action to ensure the safety, health and welfare of villagers are always protected," he said.
