KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government is ramping up efforts to bolster the state's tourism capacity, ensuring the industry remains resilient despite the ongoing Middle East crisis.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said key initiatives include establishing partnerships with global airlines to enhance connectivity, developing premium tourism products, and elevating service standards to international benchmarks.

"Through these efforts, we will position Sabah as both a premier holiday destination and a dynamic business hub," he said at the official opening of the Sheraton Kota Kinabalu.

"The sector remains resilient, backed by strong investor confidence."

Hajiji noted that several other major hotels are in various stages of completion, including Avani and Fairfield by Marriott, Grandis at The Peninsula, Club Med in Kuala Penyu, InterContinental in Papar, and Wyndham in Semporna.

These developments are set to add 2,740 rooms to the state's inventory—a testament, Hajiji said, to the industry's optimism during uncertain times.

"We are looking at hundreds of jobs, not just within the hotels but across supply chains and related services. Local suppliers, restaurants, and attractions will benefit tremendously," he said, adding that the new developments will attract high-value conferences and corporate travellers.

Sabah is targeting four million tourist arrivals this year.

As of February, the state has recorded 656,821 visitors.
