SANDAKAN: Hospital Duchess of Kent (HDOK) has achieved a major milestone in Sabah’s healthcare service after successfully performing its first “Free Flap” surgery.

The patient was a young man who had suffered for more than five years from a tumour in the left lower jawbone, known as Ameloblastoma. The growing tumour had affected his daily life.

In the complex surgery, which took about 15 hours, the specialist team successfully removed a 400-gram tumour.

More significantly, the patient’s jawbone was successfully reconstructed using bone taken from his own leg with the aid of computer-assisted surgical planning technology.

The success was the result of combined expertise from the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department across Sabah.

Leading the surgical team was Dr Jeremy Lee Ju Kuan from HDOK, alongside specialists Dr Azuriyati from Hospital Duchess of Kent Sandakan, Dr Rubindran a/l Muthusamy from Hospital Queen Elizabeth II, Dr Ahmad Fadhli bin Badruddin from Hospital Keningau, Dr Steve Maisi from Hospital Lahad Datu, and Dr Komalam a/p Mugunam from Hospital Tawau.

Appreciation was also extended to the anaesthesia team for carefully planning the patient’s management, as well as sponsors who contributed food for the surgical team to break fast during Ramadan.

The patient is now reported to be in good health and highly satisfied with the treatment outcome.

The achievement is expected to pave the way for more high-level medical treatments for the benefit of the people of Sabah.
