Sabah Industry, Entrepreneurship and Transport minister Datuk Ewon Benedick speaking during the handover of appointment letters to village community leaders in kadamaian.
Datuk Ewon Benedick, who is also Sabah deputy chief minister, said he had already sent a message and submitted a written request to Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Minister Datuk Johari Abdul Ghani for a meeting involving the Federal Government and the Sabah Government.
The meeting, he said, would be coordinated by the MITI and serve as an official platform to discuss industrial development matters and port infrastructure under the state's industrial master plan.
He added the official platform through which issues related to industrial development and ports can be discussed within the framework of the master plan.
Ewon was responding to Johari's remarks that Sabah should engage the Federal Government if it intends to undertake port expansion projects.
Yesterday during the parliament sitting, Johari had said that If the state government in Sabah wants to expand, then it should discuss this with the federal government.
Johari had also said developing downstream industries to generate greater value from Sabah's resources including palm oil sector.
"The process is indeed underway. Let me take Sepanggar Port as an example. The Sepanggar expansion project is currently being implemented, although there have been delays.
"It has already been granted a fifth extension of time, and it is a Federal Government project.
"Therefore, I would like to express my appreciation for the commitment to continue working together.
"Hopefully, when this committee convenes, matters involving the need to upgrade ports and other issues related to industrial development can be discussed," said Ewon after presenting appointment letters to 73 Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) chairpersons from across the Kadamaian state constituency here.
