KOTA KINABALU: Sabah government is studying a proposal to introduce the Kitchen Garden concept in schools to raise awareness of food security among pupils.

State Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar said discussions had been held with the Sabah Education Department following requests to establish school gardens based on the Kitchen Garden approach.

"We want children to understand the importance of food and food security from their primary school days.

"Through this initiative, they will not only appreciate the crops around them, but the produce can also be utilised by the schools," he said during Kebun Dapur Initiative programme in Kiulu near here.

Jamawi said the proposal had received positive feedback from parent-teacher associations and schools and would be implemented in stages, subject to available funding.

He also said the Kitchen Garden programme had received an encouraging response, with more than 3,000 small-scale growers cultivating gardens around their homes in the first six months of this year, nearing the programme's five-year target of 5,000 participants.

"I see that they are very enthusiastic, even sharing the produce from their Kitchen Gardens on social media.

"I am therefore proposing a Best Kitchen Garden Award to recognise their efforts and inspire more people to participate in the programme," he said.

The award could be introduced during the Sabah State Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day celebration in Tenom this September.

Jamawi added that the Jelajah Kebun Dapur programme would be expanded throughout Sabah to improve public awareness of agricultural assistance, incentives and development programmes available to farmers, livestock breeders and fishermen.
