MORE than 15 tonnes of floating solid waste have been removed from Semporna waters through the Puspabumi Eco Pledge Programme.
Reef Check Malaysia senior programme manager Adzmin Fatta said the initiative was launched following reports of rubbish-filled plastic bags drifting in open waters.
"Last year, we received reports of plastic bags containing waste floating in our waters, believed to have been thrown from boats operated by tourism operators.
"Rather than waiting for enforcement alone, Puspabumi (Persatuan Usahawan Pelancongan Bumiputera Semporna) members set up a monitoring system to ensure waste generated from tourism activities is brought back to the mainland and disposed of responsibly," he said in a statement.
The programme, launched last November, is a joint initiative between Reef Check Malaysia and Puspabumi to promote sustainable practices among local tourism operators.
