KOTA KINABALU: A utility company will be planting 500 mangrove saplings at Kampung Seri Serbang, Bongawan to conserve coastal ecosystems and protect firefly habitats.
Through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) project dubbed as Cahaya Serbang, Sabah Electricity (SE) collaborated with Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s Faculty of Tropical Forestry to execute the initiative.
Its chairman Datuk Saadiah Aziz said the company’s responsibilities extended beyond providing utility services to include protecting Sabah’s natural heritage.
“As a utility company and a part of Sabah development, SE believes it is out duty to include environnment conservation as part of our efforts to protect to state heritage," she said in a statement.
The company said mangrove ecosystems provided habitats and breeding grounds for various wildlife, helped stabilise coastal areas and supported biodiversity, including firefly habitats.
SE has also undertaken other environmental conservation initiatives, including contributing RM50,000 in 2022 towards an enrichment corridor project in the Maliau Basin, involving the planting of Napier grass as an alternative food source for Borneo pygmy elephants.
In 2024, it contributed RM50,000 to the Sabah Forestry Department for the restoration of 10ha of degraded forest in Ulu Kukut, Kota Belud.
Last year, the company conducted a mangrove planting programme at Darau Wetland in Menggatal to support the conservation of natural ecosystems.
