PENAMPANG: It is just a 1.5-litre water container with 10 holes
but the prototype has won four students of SM St Michael here a ticket
to an international-level competition.
They emerged the champion in the national-level SME Bank Y-Biz Challenge 2013 in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.
The school received RM20,000 and another RM25,000 for flight tickets.
Team leader Chelsie Feeley Bachee, 16, said they were surprised that
their simple idea could beat nine other finalists whose designs appeared
to be more sophisticated and modern.
Their bamboo or ceramic made prototype, named as "easy pouring set", costs about RM120 to make.
"We thought of the idea as students in our school canteen always have
to queue for a long time to wait for their drinks to be served.
"The idea of having a container with 10 outlets able to pour out water equally into glasses or cups at one time," she said.
The other members of the team were Jovi Jivinsol Moosom, 15, Galedine
Lind, 16, and Carlsson Paddy, 16. All four are in the same science
stream class in Form Four.
The teacher adviser to the team, Mariatul Anis Abdullah, said the
contest organisers had yet to decide which international contest the
team would be sent.
The Y-Biz Challenge is intended to nurture future entrepreneurs by
creating interest in entrepreneurship and providing the opportunity for
secondary school students to explore their creativity and
innovativeness.
Meanwhile, school principal Marie Yong, who welcomed the team at the
Kota Kinabalu airport on their return on Wednesday night, said some of
the prize money would be given to the participants.
"We will use some of the money to patent the design and later might sell the product on eBay (an online auction website).
"The profits from the sale will go to the school," she said, adding
that they were aiming at food caterers and hotels as potential buyers.
