Its president Datuk Teo Chee Kang said those amendments include shortening the political term from five to three years, establish two-tier party leadership, changes in numbers of elected and appointed supreme council members and clarification on the role of presidential council.

"The new structure of leadership will better empower the grassroot to better communicate with the leaders as well as to promote democracy principle.

"These amendments will be proposed during the congress at the end of this year," he said during the LDP joint annual divisional conference at Hakka Hall here yesterday.

Earlier, LDP deputy president Senator Datuk Chin Su Phin called  on the cabinet to overcome political and socioeconomic issues.

"On the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) issue, it is not our place as Barisan Nasional component party to interfere. However, the issue cannot be allowed to drag on and become a burden to our economy."

Chin said he opposed unreasonable bureaucracy and misconduct of government officers over incidents such as Low Yat brawl.

"Those who promote extremism and cause damage to racial and social harmony should be charged.

"Tougher sentences have to be meted out to make an example of the offenders to curb extremism in Malaysia,"Chin added.

The two-hour conference adopted a resolution on the Goods and Services Tax and urged the Customs Department to provide a more efficient system and clearer guidelines to address the public's concern.
