KOTA KINABALU: The appearance of people carrying a bulky device up Mount Kinabalu made heads turn in November last year.
For areas accessible only on foot, they are good to go with the 'Trekker'.

The group were taking turns carrying the camera with 15 lenses protruding out of a backpack to capture the surround view of the summit trail to the peak that was last measured at 4,095m.

It made many curious.

Now their work can be viewed online via Google Map Street View.

The 18kg device they shouldered all the way up on foot is called the "Trekker" and its used in areas accessible only on foot.

The project saw Google Malaysia Street View worked with the Sabah Tourism Board last year to capture 360 degree images to be uploaded on the internet.

Their work also features the trail which had since changed after the June 6 earthquake which measured 5.9 on the richter scale.

Nhazlisham Hamdan who led the expedition said they were greeted by many curious locals and foreigners while working on their task on the trail.

Nhazlisham who is the lead of Street View Operations for Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand said they were curious to know of the high tech gadget we were piggy backing.

“Tourists who are familiar with ‘Street View’ kept asking when those images would be up on Google map,” he said.

The combined team were also a hit as many took photos with them along the way.

Though climbing non stop with the 18kg device may appear to be the main challenge, Nhazlisham said the team effort made it bearable.

“The main challenge was to capture good images as the weather could change almost immediately and was unpredictable,” he said.

Two days ago Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun launched the special edition Mount Kinabalu "Street View" captured by the team.

Nhazlisham assured more of Malaysia will be visited by the Google team that will put to use its Street View Car, Trolley, ATC or Kayak - fitted with the cameras - and make the collections available on line.
