Oct, 1979
Saleha Baru ferry with 44 people hijacked off Semporna. 27 released within two days. 17 detained for a month before they are released. Two passengers are killed.

April 23, 2000
21 people kidnapped from Pulau Sipadan by Abu Sayyaf group and held captive for six months. All 21 were released in stages with the last release on Sept 11, 2000.

Sept 12, 2000
14 armed men in two speedboats kidnap three Malaysians from Pulau Sipadan, 38km northeast of Semporna. Hostages rescued several days later after Philippines armed forces launched an offensive.

Feb 8, 2010
Lai Wing Chau, 35, and Tsen Vui Chung, 42, kidnapped at Pulau Sebangkat and held captive for more than 10 months before being released on Tawi-Tawi island.

Nov 14, 2012
Tung Wee Jie, 26, and Tung Wee Wei, 34, abducted in Lahad Datu and taken to Jolo, Philippines. Wee Wei reportedly died in captivity, while Wee Jie escapes on Aug 4, 2013.

August 27, 2013
20 armed men abduct nine fishermen from two boats near Mabul island. They are released after captors are tricked into sailing to a General Operations Force post near Mabul island.

Nov 15, 2013
Taiwanese tourist, Chang An Wei, 58 kidnapped from Pom Pom island off Sabah. Her partner Hsu Li Min, 57, is killed by gunmen in the raid. Chang is abandoned in Sulu and rescued by Philippine Security forces on Dec 21, 2013.



April 2, 2014
Abu Sayyaf kidnaps Chinese tourist Gao Huayun, 28, and a Filipino worker Marcy Dayawan, 40 from Singamata Reed Resort, Semporna. Both are released to Malaysian Security officials on May 30, 2014.



May 14, 2015
Engineer, Bernard Then Ted Fun, 39 and a restaurant manager Thien Nyuk Fun, 50, abducted at Ocean King Seafood Restaurant in Sandakan by Abu Sayyaf. Thien is released on Nov 8 while Then is beheaded on Nov 17.



April 1, 2016
Four crewmen- Wong Teck Pang, 31: Wong Hung Song, 34: Wong Teck Chi, 29: and Johny Lau Jung Hien, 2- kidnapped by Filipino gunmen near Pulau Ligitan off Semporna and released on June 8.



July 9, 2016

Three Indonesians from Kupang East Nusa Tenggara- Lorens Koten, 34; Teo Dores Kopong, 40: and Emanuel Arakian, 46- taken from a trawler at Sinakut Lahad Datu by five armed men believed to be Abu Sayyaf group.  All released on September 18, 2016. 

July 18, 2016

Five Malaysians Tayudin Anjut, 45, Abdul Rahim Summas, 62; Fandy Bakran, 26; and Mohamad Jumadil Rahim, 23 from Tawau; as well as Mohd Ridzuan Ismail, 32, from Pahang on a tugboat were kidnapped at Dent Heaven waters in Lahad Datu. 

Families in Tawau try to raise RM2million on Oct 18, 2016 from public to secure the release of the five. Last contact with kidnappers was on Oct 12, 2016. 

Four released while three are kidnapped.
Aug 3, 2016

Gunmen stormed a fishing boat with three Indonesian fishermen onboard and kidnapped one crew in Kertam waters off Kuala Kinabatangan. 


Two other crew members, who were not taken, sailed to sandakan to lodge police report.


Sept 10, 2016 (Saturday)
Three crew members, including the captain, of a trawler near Pulau Bodgaya and Pulau Bohey Dulang in Semporna were kidnapped at 10.40pm. 

Victims, refugees with IMM13 document and census letter issued by Special Task Force, are identified as Loloi Alpin, in his 30s, Sami in his 30s, and Masurin, in his 50s. 

Seven kidnappers, armed with pistols and M16 rifles, arrived in a wooden speedboat.  

Sept 27, 2016 (Tuesday)
Fisherman Ruslan Nasri Sarapin, 39, eight men with M14 and M16 riffles took him from Semporna waters. 

He was released five days later ( Oct 1, 2016)

Oct 13, 2016 (Thursday)
A fisherman was shot several times while fishing at Tigabu island, off Kudat waters. Sought treatment at Sandakan Duchess of Kent hospital, right hand amputated.

Oct 24, 2016 (Monday)
A crew on board a fishing trawler at Jambongan island off Beluran waters were robbed at gunpoint but escaped unhurt.

Oct 31, 2016 (Monday)
A POSSIBLE robbery attempt at Sandakan waters near Pulau Berhala involving a tugboat carrying sand from Sandakan, stumbled upon a suspicious boat while en route to Tawau.

Two Indonesians fishermen, aged 46 and 52, were kidnapped by armed men at two separate locations off Kertam waters, Lahad Datu between 11am and 1145am.

Nov 19, 2016 (Saturday) 

Two Indonesian fishermen kidnapped in the waters off Merabung near Kunak, Lahad Datu at 7.30pm. Armed gunmen took five mobile phones and RM1,850 in cash.

Dec 8, 2016 (Thursday)

Three kidnappers, including key Abu Sayyaf leader Abraham Hamid, killed in a shootout with  Police General Operations Force Battalion 14's Tiger Platoon in Waters off Semporna. Two arrested and another missing after the one-minute skirmish. 

The seven-armed group ransacked a fishing boat, took a mobile phone and kidnapped the skipper between bakapit and Pulau Adal waters at Lahad Datu at 9pm.

At 9.30pm, same group struck another fishing boat at Pulau Gaya Semporna, taking food items and an outboard engine. 

Ten minutes later, they took another skipper from a nearby small vessel. 

9.51 shootout with police. A hostage was rescued. A policeman was shot on his calf.
