KOTA KINABALU: Internet traffic in Sabah and Sarawak will be better once Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) launches its submarine cable which will give higher internet speeds for consumers.

Sabah TM General Manager Sukkuriya Masri said the cable from peninsular Malaysia to Sabah and Sarawak would give internet speeds of 4 terabytes per second.

“Our existing internet speed in East Malaysia is at 700 gigabytes per second, which will be retired once the new cable is launched.

“Once implemented, TM will be able to provide better services in terms of bandwidth for users in both states,” he said, adding the launching was supposed to be held last month but expected to be launched in near future.

He was speaking after breaking of fast ceremony with media here on Wednesday.

Sukkuriya added the last count of internet usage among users in Sabah saw an increase of 150 per cent on annual basis.

The new submarine cable, he said, could possibly cater consumers’ needs in Sabah for another five years.

Meanwhile on services improvement, TM will also add additional 30,000 units of UniFi, high speed broadband service, for people in Sabah.

“We will also work on (coverage) expansion and also improving double-speed programme for our UniFi users who subscribed it last year.”

Starting January this year, UniFi home customers can expect their broadband speed to be upgraded while paying the same price.

TM has recently hit one million subscribers mark for its UniFi.
