PENAMPANG: A 17-year-old girl who was trapped alone for nine hours in her flooded home here could only cry and wait to be rescued.
Nicoley Venes recalled the water rising up to her knees when the flood hit her house at Kampung Kivatu her at about 7pm on Thursday.
“I was alone at home and called my father who was in Putatan to ask for help from authorities.
“As the water rose and expected to go up as high as my shoulder, I went up to a higher place for safety,” said the SMK Bahang student, adding that she did not dare to go to her grandmother’s house next door as she was afraid.
Nicoley did not have anything to eat that night and could only cry when the electricity went off until the rescue personnel came at about 4am.
Nicoley, who was met at the relief centre at Penampang sports complex multi-purpose hall here, said most of the belongings at home were destroyed and she could only save important documents and her clothes.
Another family from Kampung Kasigui who is also seeking shelter at the same place said one of the four children had to be admitted to Likas Women and Children’s hospital due to breathing problems.
“Our youngest son, Avroey, 2, had to be admitted as his asthma attack got worse after the flooding incident two days ago.
“All of us could only sleep at 4am yesterday because of the cold and rain. Avroey and two other children are suffering from respiratory problems,” said the 33-year-old father Roney Salamat.
Meanwhile, Kapayan assemblyman Jannie Lasimbang added the situation in the district was improving but the authorities were still on standby as rain was expected at the west coast, Kudat, Sandakan and interior of Sabah this afternoon.
