KOTA KINABALU: On the second day of his 65th birthday celebration, the Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin took to the stage at Likas bay here and surprised the audience with fender electric guitar performances of a range of songs.
The ditties played by the Sabah governor included Elvis Presley’s One Night and the Malay classic Senandung Malam.
Some members of the 3,000-strong audience were seen dancing to Tun Juhar’s rendition of several evergreen songs, including a number of ‘cha cha’ tunes.
It is learnt that Tun Juhar’s performance was entirely impromptu, and was not part of the programme.
“As he told the audience, (the performance was) a sincere token of appreciation from him to the public.
“There were so many people who turned out today for this event,” said main organising committee chairman Datuk Jaujan Sambakong.
Jaujan, who is also Housing and Local Government Minister, said participants at the event included Brunei nationals.
Today’s celebration, which began at 7am, was joined by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal and wife Shuryani Shuaib, Cabinet ministers and Kota Kinabalu City Hall mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai.
Later, thousands cycled along with Tun Juhar, Mohd Shafie and other state leaders down the coastal road here.
The bicycle ride culminated with Tun Juhar releasing 65 pigeons at the beach.
