KOTA BELUD: Authorities and tour operators can help travellers feel safe by minimising public contact and advising their clients on the current Covid-19 situation.
Sabah Backpacker Operators Association president Dares Saham Asaad@Octavius said among the preventive measures include having authorities ensure travellers use secondary airports which have less traffic.
"For example, in Kota Kinabalu, we have an old airport dubbed as Terminal 2 which has less people. This will minimise contact with the public.
"Travellers can go directly to their agents or tour operators for destinations," he said, adding that tourism players also have to keep guests informed of the district Covid-19 zoning status.
He was speaking during a virtual talk hosted by Sabah Tourism Malaysia director Jamilah Abdul Halim on "Kota Belud, destinations for millennials" yesterday.
Other panellists were Majalah Backpackerz writer Ahmad Irfan Hussain and Sabah tour guide AK Mohd Shahrin Nizam Haisron.
On attracting more tourists, Dares also suggested players offer new products such as lodges that offer halal products, ladies-only areas, bed and bike among others.
"Women love to travel in groups, which is trending in some countries like New Zealand and Australia.
"Bed and Bike is also a service for those who want to keep their bike and maybe to service them at the lodge," he added.
As for Kota Belud destinations, Dares said the district, which is twice the size of Singapore, offers a variety of products.
"Mantanani island is one of the gems in the district, it used to be listed as one of the waters with best visibility. It also has bioluminescent plankton during high tide.
"There are also other activities such as jungle trekking, river cruises for firefly and proboscis monkey watching, water rafting at Kadamaian river, camping and other adventurous activities.
"Now is a good time for locals to travel around Sabah as there are less people and many are offering affordable packages."
