KOTA KINABALU: Police launched a manhunt for two men who escaped a psychiatric hospital, here.

Kota Kinabalu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Habibi Majinji said they were alerted of the incident on Friday evening by the Mesra Bukit Padang Hospital staff members.

"On Sept 4 at 5.10pm, a police report was lodged at the Luyang police station that at about 3.45pm, two men from the hospital had gone missing, believed to have escaped.

"On the same day at 4.25pm, the complainant was told by one of the staff who was carrying out routine checks at the ward," Habibi said in a statement.

Further investigation found that at 3pm, the duo had come out from their dormitory for an afternoon tea but were not seen at their dining table.

"It is believed they had escaped by climbing the fence next to the dining place and ran towards Jalan Bantayan," he said.

The two were sent to the psychiatric hospital last year following a court order in two separate cases.

The first patient is an offender under Section 14(A) Sexual Offences against Children Act 2017 from the Kota Kinabalu prison and was admitted to the ward on May 10 last year for mild intellectual disability.

The second patient faced a murder charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code and was sent to the hospital on Jan 14 last year for schizophrenia.

Those with information on the escapees can contact Inspector Palani Nathan Pathmanathan at 016-412 2835 or the Kota Kinabalu police headquarters hotline at 088-529220.
