Outing for internet link gets 3 hurt

RANAU: Three students were injured when they fell from a suspension bridge, which collapsed several days ago at Kampung Gusi here, while they were trying to get internet connection for their online classes.

The incident was believed to have happened at about 9pm on Monday.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam, who confirmed the incident, said one of the students suffered a fractured leg and was hospitalised at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu following the incident.

He said the three students were from SMK Ulu Sugut Ranau and were trying to access the internet on certain parts of the suspension bridge.

"I am going to the village soon to assess the situation and get the funds from the federal government to repair the bridge. We are hoping that the villagers will be patient," said Joachim, who is Kundasang assemblyman.

A posting about the incident went viral over social media, alleging there were eight students from SMK Ulu Sugut who fell down after the suspension bridge suddenly collapsed.

It is learnt that the bridge, which is about 18m above the river, is the only area that has an internet connection signal.

It has become a routine for the villagers, especially students to gather there to get connected.

The school's Parent Teacher Association chairman, Ratimin Kukunut said he was informed that the incident occured a few days ago at about 9pm.

"The villagers said the children were in the middle of the bridge to go for online classes when it suddenly collapsed.

"Internet connectivity at the village, Kampung Gusi, is poor. But, the connection is better at night on the suspension bridge," said Ratimin.
