PENAMPANG: A restaurant here is offering free food for those in need starting Sunday until the end of the year.

Ching Fah restaurant owner Hee Vui Chung said on Sunday starting from 1pm, they will prepare 100 packs of food for people to take away.

"There are definitely people who lost their jobs or were affected by this Covid-19 pandemic.

"Although some argued that there will be opportunists who come for the free food, there might be 10 people who really need this kind of help," he told the New Straits Times.

Each packet worth about RM5 will have rice, chicken and vegetables.

The restaurant does not limit the number of packets each person can get but hopes the people will only take what they want as it is meant for everyone in need.

Hee added that the idea stemmed from the rice stock donated by members of a temple here.

"Due to the closure, no one is taking the rice and we thought about cooking it at the restaurant and giving it away before it becomes bad.

"Our restaurant is also sponsoring meat and vegetables for this charity," he said, adding the vegetable supplier also gave discounts while other family members and friends donated some funds for the restaurant upon learning about the charity.

When asked whether the restaurant knows any specific people who are really in need of the help, Hee said they will try to find them when the activity begins this weekend.

Upon identifying them, he will find ways to assist in terms of food aid to them.

"We are also hoping that there will be more people coming forward to help others who are really in need of assistance especially food."
