TUARAN: A home-based tailor at Kampung Kindu, near here, voluntarily sews personal protection equipment (PPE) for medical frontliners.

Liza Iskandar Lee, 48, said since Nov 9, she has sewn 100 gowns using her own sewing machine.

"The government, through Kawasan Rukun Tetangga (KRT) Bandar Sierra, supplied us the materials to make the PPE.

"It is a voluntary effort among the women, as it is the only way we can contribute in fighting Covid-19 in the state," she said during the handover of PPEs to the Sabah Health Department at a mall here.

KRT, initially formed as a neighbourhood watch, has evolved to fulfill the spirit of unity among the community.

Present at the event were Sabah Community Development and People's Wellbeing Minister Shahelmy Yahya, state National Unity and National Integration Department director Delin Liet Blaun, as well as Health Department representative Dr Yogendra Panchalingam.

Earlier, Shahelmy said that since September, 19 KRT have made 5,909 gowns, 532 face shields, 1,102 caps and 232 foot covers.

"It is a joint programme between the state National Unity and National Integration Department and Sabah Health Department.

"It shows that the people are concerned with the time and effort put in by frontliners to fight the infection," he said, adding that KRTs are a good platform to unite the people through gotong-royong.

Shahelmy added that Sabah now has 1,066 KRTs and another 300 will be set up by the end of next year.

As for Covid-19 aid distribution, he said apart from those affected by the quarantine order and lockdown, the state government has also deposited one-off cash assistance to respective recipients affected by the pandemic.
