KOTA KINABALU: Social gatherings including a wedding ceremony are among the causes of new Covid-19 cases in Sabah.

State Covid-19 spokesperson Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said an akad nikah ceremony had led to new infections in the Sri Gaya cluster here and in Kudat.

"I would like to appeal to people to avoid social gatherings that can expose them to infections.

"Unless it is necessary, stay at home and isolate yourself and avoid any contact with your friends," he said.

Today, Sabah recorded 646 new Covid-19 cases - Sandakan has 226, Kota Kinabalu 212, Tawau 71, Penampang 49, Putatan 22, Lahad Datu 21, Tuaran 20, Keningau 12 and Semporna 9.

He said 121 cases in Sandakan and 146 in Kota Kinabalu were close contacts of Covid-19 patients.

Masidi, who is also state Local Government and Housing minister, was speaking to the media during a virtual press conference.

Seven deaths were reported, with three in Sandakan, Tawau (2), Kota Kinabalu (1) and Tuaran (1).

The Health Ministry also identified three clusters namely Sandakan prison cluster (39 cases), Lahad Datu dialysis cluster(19) and Sepanggar cluster(7).

He also said the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) that was imposed at Taman Harmoni in Sandakan on Oct 23 would end tomorrow.

"As of Oct 26, there are no more new Covid-19 positive cases recorded in that area.

"However, Taman Harmoni will still be subjected to standard operating procedures (SOP) under the statewide Conditional Movement Control Order (until Nov 9)," he said.

As for the deportation process of immigrants from temporary detention centres here, which recorded more than 400 cases, he said this would be discussed with the different countries of origin when the situation improves.
