KOTA KINABALU: Former Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sabah, Tun Sakaran Dandai died this morning from Covid-19.

His son, Datuk Seri Nasir Sakaran confirmed that his 91-year-old father passed away at a private hospital here.

"The hospital had informed our family members at 6am that our father died this morning.

"His body will be handled by the state mosque and to be buried at the Heroes' Mausoleum," he was quoted by a portal.

Last Wednesday, Sakaran was admitted to Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu hospital here as he was believed to have been infected with Covid-19.

Nasir had said his father was stable during the admission, but had to be moved to the ICU as doctors said he required close monitoring.

He added that his siblings had made video calls to their father while he was in the hospital.

Sakaran was the Semporna member of parliament from 1986 until 1995.

He became the eighth Sabah chief minister from March to December 1994.

Between January 1995 and December 2002, he served as the eighth Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sabah.
