KOTA KINABALU: A resort here is selling nasi lemak at RM3 each to raise funds for 53 underprivileged children in Sabah.
The proceeds from the charity drive will go to Madrasah Waqaf Islamiah Sabah in Likas, which had recently approached Shangri-La Tanjung Aru for plates and bowls for the children.
The effort began with an initial charity drive on Aug 31 which was held in conjunction with National Day.
At that time, the resort sold all 350 packs of nasi lemak in just three hours. Donors were seated in their cars and waited in a queue at a drive-thru counter as early as two hours before the counter opened.
Shangri-La Tanjung Aru general manager Timothy Sainsbury said they raised enough funds to buy the plates and bowls that the home had requested from the sales at the Aug 31 event.
The resort was now looking at purchasing other necessities for the home.
In conjunction with Malaysia Day tomorrow, the resort will once again do the same charity drive known as as the Nasi Lemak Charity Drive starting 11am.
Besides being opened to members of the public, the resort is also extended the event for employees.
Nasi lemak will be served at the 'Colleagues' Café' today and tomorrow. Staff are also encouraged to donate cash and in kind to the home.
All proceeds collected from resort staff and members of the public from the nasi lemak charity drive will go to the children and the home.
