SEMPORNA: The state government is ensuring professional dive guides in the district are getting necessary refresher skills, particularly on safety aspects.

State Tourism, Culture and Environment minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said scuba diving is one of the main tourism products in Sabah especially in Semporna.

"With the beauty of the underwater world, dive masters play important roles in handling scuba diving activities for local and international tourists.

"Dive guide services are required to ensure the fun and safety of visitors at the optimum level. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the activity has been halted for quite a long period" he said.

Therefore, the Ministry, through the Sabah Tourism Board, has collaborated with the Semporna Tourism Association to provide training to prevent any untoward incidents and minimise risks.

Yesterday, 30 participants completed and were given certificates for the two-day Emergency First Response and Rescue Refresher course.

Among the objectives of the programme include increasing safety and rescue operations, human capital building, reduce hierarchy of risk control and improve Sabah's reputation to provide best services in the diving industry.

Suhaimi Armstrong, one of the participants, said he is thankful to the ministry for organising such a course to improve their rescue skills.

He is hoping such training will also be held for snorkelling guides throughout the state.
