TONGOD: The state has approved at least 12 tourism-related projects costing less than RM20,000, here, said Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin.

"Among those approved include the upgrading of a Rumah Besar Cina which is being used as an exhibition centre for the historical and the cultural heritage of the Chinese people.

"The district council has also received RM40,000 to upgrade the Heart of Borneo monument which became the landmark for the district," he said in a statement.

Yesterday, Jafry and Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar attended a district development briefing ceremony with Tongod district officer Mohd Fauzi Norbeh.

He had also requested a Tongod Tourism Action Committee to be set up to support rural community-based tourism development.

He said the committee would help the Ministry to plan and implement development programmes including the upgrading of basic infrastructure for more competitive tourism.
