KOTA KINABALU: The escalating poverty rate in Sabah is due to the "betrayal" in "importing" poor people from neighbouring countries to the state.

United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO) president Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau said out of the 3.8 million population in Sabah, there are about 1 million people with dubious citizenship.

He claimed these people were imported to be used as "fixed deposit voters" to ensure certain parties continued being in power.

"But at the same time, the rights of local Sabahans in the interior are being neglected.

"Dilapidated schools, bad condition of roads, and job opportunities for locals are nonexistent.

"Therefore, the people of Sabah should rise. The rise has to begin from awareness of Sabah citizenship," he said during the launch of the tri-annual general meeting for Tuaran UPKO.

The Tuaran member of parliament said UPKO will continue to ensure solutions for immigrants to be implemented.

He added among the measures is to call for the current Malaysian identity cards to be replaced.

By doing so, Madius said it could identify and take action against those who have obtained the documents illegally.

"It is clear that the steps taken by UPKO so far to urge the government to find a complete solution to this problem proves that the accusation that 'UPKO breeds immigrants' is a slander and lie by irresponsible parties.

"UPKO will continue its struggle as a political organisation that practises policy-driven matters as the backbone of solving various problems of the people."
