KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) will introduce prepaid cards for consumers in squatter settlements to tackle power theft.

The utility company transformation chief officer Norhizami Abu Hasan said the state government has agreed to the implementation of the electricity supply scheme for certain settlements.

He said through the prepaid method, people could top up the value according to their monthly household usage.

"The state government is cooperating with the Energy Commission and SESB in finalising the procedures to supply electricity to all settlements across Sabah," he said in a statement.

In 2020, SESB reported a loss of between RM20 million and RM30 million due to power theft and illegal connections, mainly in squatter areas.

Norhizami added that the company understands electricity supply is crucial for every premise.

"However, to prevent any unwanted incident, illegal connections are highly prohibited as we need to ensure the supply obtained is legitimate and according to existing procedures, as well as fulfilling the Energy Commission's safety aspects."

Norhizami added that SESB will continue to conduct enforcement operations against electricity theft or illegal connections.

He said those activities including tampering with the meters will not only cause losses but also endanger others as it could cause fire and other incidents.

Apart from that, it will also disrupt the stability of electricity supply when demand exceeds capacity thus causing power disruptions.
