SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha chief warden Azhari Abd Sagap admitted he forbade students from making calls on July 16 after Zara Qairina Mahathir was found unconscious outside her hostel.

KOTA KINABALU: SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha chief warden Azhari Abd Sagap admitted he forbade students from making calls on July 16 after Zara Qairina Mahathir was found unconscious outside her hostel.

The eighth witness told the Coroner's Court that he issued the instruction in a WhatsApp group with wardens and also in a personal message to a teacher.

"Prohibit students from making calls for that day (July 16), that's it. I never asked for the switch to be turned off.

"I did not want parents at home to be worried about their children at the hostel.

"I also did not want the spread of unverified news," Azhari said when examined by conducting officer Mohd Fairuz Johari.

Last week, the school security guard, Linah Mansoding, testified that Azhari had asked for the six public phones at the dormitory to be switched off for 48 hours.

Azhari, however, said he was not aware how long those phones had been out of service.

He also said that in the event of emergencies, students could still contact their family members through teachers.

The chief warden further acknowledged that he was informed about two students who wanted to return home on the night of July 17, but their requests were denied.
