Zara Qairina inquest: Forensic expert demonstrates injuries on mannequin

KOTA KINABALU: The afternoon inquest session into the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir saw forensic pathologist Dr Jessie Hiu marking injuries on a mannequin brought to the Coroner's Court here.


Counsel Rizwandean M. Borhan, representing Zara's family, had requested that the markings be done by the inquest's first witness before Coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan.


Dr Hiu was assisted by two court interpreters during the process.


After about 10 minutes, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital expert explained to the court the injuries she had marked.


Yesterday, Dr Hiu's witness statement revealed that Zara had sustained multiple injuries, fractures and haematoma.


She said that, based on the post-mortem, the deceased had a sutured laceration at the back of the head but no skull or facial bone fractures.


Other findings include:


-Brain showed liquefactive changes (necrosis) due to decomposition and could not be assessed.

-The lower part of the left forearm, wrist, hand and fifth finger were bruised with deformity of the left forearm and wrist.

-There were bruises of the right ankle with a comminuted fracture of the distal part of the right tibia (bone of right leg) involving the right ankle joint.

-There was a laceration at the left foot, bruises of the left ankle and left foot with comminuted and oblique fractures of the distal part of left tibia.

-Comminuted fracture of the calcaneum (bone of left leg and heel), dislocation of left ankle joint.

-Fracture of the second to fourth lumbar vertebrae (lower back bones).

-Psoas muscles hematoma

-Localised retroperitoneal pelvic tissue hematoma.
