KOTA KINABALU: Sabah will be formalise an overseas training agreement involving selected sports at Guangzhou Sport University, to strengthen the quality of Sabah athletes’ training to international standards.

Youth Development, Sports Advancement and Creative Economy (KBSK) minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan said the strategic initiative aims to improve the quality of athlete training in Sabah through internationally recognised sports science and technology approaches, while enhancing the competitiveness of state athletes to a higher level.

According to Nizam, a training approach based on sports science and technology is a long-term investment by the state government to produce high-performance athletes capable of competing not only at the national level but also internationally.

“This sports science and technology-based training approach is a long-term investment by the state government to produce high-performance athletes who can compete at the world level,” he said during the Sabah State Sports Awards 2023–2024 ceremony held here on Friday.

In addition, the ministry has established strategic collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to develop quality athletes through research, transfer of expertise and the use of modern training technology.

To ensure continuity in the state’s sporting performance, Nizam said the ministry will continue to intensify grassroots development through the organisation of competitions at district, divisional and state levels, including the Sabah Games (SAGA).

“The organisation of SAGA in Tawau in October last year demonstrated the state government’s commitment to grassroots sports development, with the participation of 7,506 athletes and officials from across Sabah,” he said.
